Question: What eye findings are suspicious for shaken-baby syndrome?

Answer: Retinal bleeding in all four quadrants of the retina, and at all levels of retinal depth. Schisis cavities (a split between layers of the retina) is a bit more specific finding.

If you suspect shaken baby, an eye exam needs to be done within a few days, as the retinal hemorhagges clear up quickly. A detailed eye exam/drawing by an attending ophthalmologist, or photos, need to be taken.

Of note, non-eye findings include:

  • Intracranial bleeding
  • Brain edema
  • Bone ractures
  • Bruises along trunk
  • Torn frenulum (under your upper gum)
